What to put in an Australian test and tag register: asset ID, test date, next due, outcome, tester, intervals by environment, and a printable row layout that links to ready spreadsheets.
Auditors and principal contractors ask for a test and tag register, not a box of loose tags. Our test and tag guide covers AS/NZS 3760 intervals. This page is the register template: the columns that stop overdue leads staying on site.
The short answer
- One row per asset: lead, tool, RCD, generator outlet, temporary board.
- Record asset ID, description, location, test date, next due, result (pass/fail), tester name and licence/competency, and comments.
- Set the interval from the environment (construction, factory, office, hire) per AS/NZS 3760 guidance – do not invent a single "yearly" date for everything.
- Failed items are quarantined and tagged out until repaired and retested.
- Colour overdue next-due dates so they jump off the sheet.
Printable register row (copy into a spreadsheet)
| Asset ID | Description | Location | Class | Test date | Next due | Result | Tester | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LEAD-014 | 15 A extension 20 m | Ute kerbside | I | 12/09/2026 | 12/12/2026 | Pass | J. Andrews | Construction 3-month |
| GRN-003 | 9" angle grinder | Workshop bench | II | 01/07/2026 | 01/01/2027 | Pass | External | Factory 6-month |
| RCD-001 | Portable RCD | Site box | — | 12/09/2026 | 12/10/2026 | Pass | J. Andrews | Push-button daily + formal |
Worked example – mobile welder kit
Twelve leads and tools on the ute. Construction environment → 3-month interval for Class I equipment. Register sorted by next due. Anything inside 14 days of due gets tested on the next quiet Friday. Failed grinder lead quarantined in a red tub, not left coiled with the good leads.
Useful gear (affiliate): digital multimeter for basic continuity checks by a competent person, and a LED torch when tagging boards in dark switch rooms. Testing itself must be done by a competent person with the right equipment.
Quick answers
What interval should my register use?
Follow AS/NZS 3760 guidance for the environment and equipment class, plus manufacturer instructions. Construction sites are typically shorter than offices.
Can I keep tags without a register?
Tags help on the tool. The register is what proves history, next due and who tested it.
Who can test and tag?
A competent person. Some states have extra licensing rules for certain work. Check your state regulator.
Should plant inspections share the same due date?
No. Plant, lifting gear and electrical test-and-tag are different systems. One workbook with separate due columns is fine.
